Sports Medicine

Sports medicine is a modern area of medical practice focused on the total care to athletes from all levels, ranging from amateur to professional. This also includes individuals who participate in recreational or leisure level physical activity within a club, university, primary and secondary school levels. In general, care begins prior to the start of participation with pre-participation physical examination, concussion baseline evaluation, heart and lung fitness, functional assessments and laboratory investigation to ensure that one is fit prior to the initiation of activity. Pre-participation screening is important for those that have not been active and are wanting to achieve a more active lifestyle.

Surgical Treatment

Surgical treatment is always the last option. Technical ability is important, but what is most important is the ability to ascertain what is underlying problem that needs to be treated. The professionals at Emirates Integra have combined, over 100 years of clinical experience. This translates to accurate diagnosis, and the most effective surgery being performed that is based on best available evidence.

Interventional Treatment

For most problems that develop, conservative interventional treatments such as manual therapy, chiropractic care, manual lymphatic drainage, shockwave, exercise therapy, and acupuncture are able to solve 70-80% of problems in a short period of time. In some instances, the addition of regenerative injection therapy such as PRP (platelet rich plasma), dextrose prolotherapy, conditioned serums, and or stem cells can be an adjunct to care to help speed recovery and overall well-being.

4 Ways to Prevent Injury

1- Great Coaching

Injury prevention starts with great coaching. Most of the time injuries can be avoided and are prevented by proper education by knowledgeable professionals who understand how the human body works.

2- Gradual Participation

It’s great to get back into practice and training after the off-season, but it must be done in a way that is progressive and sustainable, and leads to desired goals for competition and personal success.

3- Scheduled Recovery

Our bodies are capable of incredible performance, however adequate rest and recovery are required for optimal outcomes. Overuse injuries are the most common in endurance sports such as running, cycling, triathlons and combination sports such as CrossFit and circuit based high intensity interval training. Acute injuries are common in contact sports such as American football, soccer, hockey and rugby. Optimizing your rest and recovery will provide you with the best possible outcomes for healing allowing a quick return to your activity.

4- Nutrition
Regenerative nutrition is pro-repair and anti-inflammatory. It is a critical component of keeping our bodies game-ready to perform for both training and competition. Strenuous activities demand a lot from our body including our muscles, ligaments, joints, and tendons. Our repair systems are quite capable of keeping everything in working order, however key nutritional components are required. A balanced, evidence supported approach to nutrition is required for success.

How Do Periodic Fitness Evaluations Optimize Performance?
Periodic fitness evaluations to assess movement, cardio-vascular health, bone quality, and muscle function are another way to prevent injury and optimize performance for both training and competition. Assessments pro-actively stay ahead of problems before they develop.

Expert Sports Medicine Decision Making
When injuries do occur, having a team of professionals that work in a collaborative way from different backgrounds is very helpful. The team is able to perform comprehensive evaluations and formulate treatment plans that are in-line with the goals of the athlete. Consideration of time of season, fitness level and long-term outlook contribute to treatment recommendations.
